Gents,
I thought I should drop you a quick note to say how absolutely fantastic you all were in the Rose and Crown on Saturday. I thought the performance and sound was terrific and I really enjoyed seeing you play again. I look forward to the next gig. I would also like to say that the web site is phenomenal and the new homepage and layout really works. Well done.
See you again soon, Ben |
Thanks Ben,
Glad you liked the night . What a fantastic audience, I don't think another person could of squeezed in that room last night. Lots of new faces too, brilliant gig!

| Hi Guys, With many thanks to my good friend Elwyn Davies who graciously has pointed me in your direction, I'd just like to let you know that I really enjoy your music. I met Elwyn through our mutual appreciation of Jethro Tull in particular and flute rock in general. It's great to hear other artists utilizing such a beautiful instrument in their work. I love all the tunes I've heard from you so far. Keep up the good work, and I hope that Steve recovers quickly from accident. I don't know what the chances are of a US engagement, but Elwyn tells me the live shows are great. Best wishes for your future success , Dave Morris |
Thanks Dave, Glad to hear you like our stuff. Elwyn is a great help with Molly promotion. My hand is on the mend (slowly), thanks for the concern. We would all love to play in the US, maybe one day........... Cheers Steve. |

Molly Bloom Live at Brookbottom 13/8/04
Molly Bloom is a band which has a great deal of talent. If this was the 70s,
these guys would have a major record deal. Its not and they don't !
I have long admired their debut CD (Reviewed by DPRP & Progressive Rock some months ago)
http://www.dprp.net/reviews/200408.html#mollybloom
http://www.progressiveworld.net/mollybloom.html
This band has an eclectic mixture of styles. It is difficult to describe Molly's music. Their music includes much flute played in a style similar to Ian Anderson ( S. Dundon once toured with M. Abrahams in the This Was band). Other points of reference, include even a hint of Leonard Cohen and Madness.
However , Molly are no Tull rip of band. Molly have created their own unique style of flute tinged rock. Their compositions are varied involving inspiring moments of flute rock and tongue in cheek lyrics.
‘She took the house and took the car
I swear this woman's ruthless
If I wore dentures she'd travel far to leave my mouth all toothless'
From If a track on Molly's debut CD
I for one, am grateful that I have had the chance to discover their wonderful music.
I was finally able to get to one of their shows. By the end of the night the band had gained many more admirers and more than a few CD sales.
The current Molly line up is a three piece which includes S.Dundon on Flute and vocals , Tyrion Moses on acoustic guitar and Derek Smith on Mandolin and bass.
I was initially perplexed how the rhythmic nature of many of their compositions might sound without a drummer. After their opening number ‘ Mistress Winter' all fears were put aside as I was treated to an hour and fifteen minutes of some of the best live music I have heard in recent years. ( To put my statement into some type of perspective, I enjoyed this gig more than the recent Tull UK tour ,which I attended three times)
The band played compositions from their self titled debut CD and their Green Fence EP/CD.
It was an awesome night of wonderfully constructed and performed music . The intimate venue created a perfect atmosphere for S. Dundons stories with music. S.Dundon's Anderson type flute forays were to the fore and gave the performance of the band great depth and diversity. I particularly liked the selective use of a wah wah type effect pedal , through which Dundon was able to produce sounds not usually associated with the flute. He used this technique particularly on the song ‘Blood'. His most impressive and lengthy solo was reserved for the middle section of ‘Bullets' In this puffing and rasping flute interlude the melody of the song was emphasised and improvised. It was very good and very effective !Tyrion Moses was superb. He played at break neck speed when required , beating out melodies and complex rhythms. At other times he played some of the most beautiful and melodic guitar passages I have ever heard. I have seen many virtuoso guitar players over the years, including John Etheridge and GaryBoyle, on this night Tyrion's playing was as memorable as theirs. A mention should also be made of Derek Smith a fantastic bass and mandolin player. Steve's vocals were excellent and wide ranging , he has the ability to sing both high and low. His overall performance was very intense, eyes closed one moment , staring manically the next. His virtuoso screams and grunts used to illustrate some of the songs were amazing adding not detracting to the performance. The highlight of the night was a superb version of ‘Sprite night'. In this song Stevie Dundon's theatrical approach to his music was memorable. Singing the words ‘I am insane' his face contorted and appeared to spin on its axis . It was a wonderful effect , created in part by strobe lighting and dry ice , which fitted this songs study of insanity.
The band also played a number of unreleased tracks ‘unfinished business' and the Tull inspired ditty 'Dare Ya'. A number of unreleased instrumental
tunes which featured great flute solos were also played . These allowed the band to show their individual talents. One track in particular reminded of Blackmores night ‘Play Minstrel Play' and had the audience moving in appreciation.
Set list in no particular order
Mistress Winter
Sprite Night
Green Fence
Unfinished Business
Sprite Night( The highlight with effects laden flute
played with a kind of wa wa pedal cool)
Stevie Winwood haircut
Bullets with my name on it( complete with amazing
flute sounds)
Dare Ya
unreleased instrumentals
Waxworks
Leave me alone
50,000 camels
Unfortunately the wonderful 'if' was not played
I hope that this snippet of the Molly live experience might make you curious to check out their music.
Bands with this much talent certainly deserve much wider exposure You wont be disappointed if you manage to see or hear their compositions played. I wasn't

| The Molly Bloom album Elwyn had told me I would enjoy this.He was right. No sooner had the opening strains to Mistress Winter hit my car speakers than I'm tapping my feet with a huge smile on my face .Yes this is more like it . A real band with a real identity musically and lyrically.Sure there are certainly elements of Tull in there and why not and though the band might not thank me for it.....I can also hear Madness in there as well.
Sprite Night ,the title track with its changing rythmns and Bullets with my name on are all favourites .Moods change throughout though there are a lot of dark yet humourous undertones. This is a well recorded album deserving plenty of plays -very well played by a great bunch of educated and friendly guys making the comraderie between musicians and punters alike display their obvious positive enthusiasm for what they are about .
Highly recommended.....Patrick [Cold Flame]

I'm Andy
Niblo, a student filmmaker from the north west. In February and march
of 2003, i had the great pleasure of recording a live video of the band
at home during one of their rehearsals.
I had seen them perform live in Bury after meeting their guitarist Terry
when i worked in a guitar shop (well, i say guitar shop, what i mean
is shit hole) with him. What i saw on that night impressed me beyond
belief. I had never heard any of their stuff, but the sound created
was truly original in todays shallow market.
In the sound are echoes of Jethro Tull meets Van Halen. The guitar tone
is sweet and incindiary, bass and mandolin lines that make you nod,
and vocals that wrap you up in cotton wool one minute but spit nails
the next. Are complented by an extremely wholesome flute sound and tunes
you whistle long after the song has finished.
Molly Bloom are truly a band that represent all that was good about
music in the good old days. Muscians so intoxicated by writing good
songs, that it doesn't matter if it not loud. They are a band that are
proud of the music they play and are a great band to work with.
They deserve greatness.

Some
words about how much I have enjoyed the Molly Bloom CD. It is difficult
to categorise Molly's music, eclectic , energetic , unique, but all
I need to say is that their debut CD has been constantly in my CD player
since I received it some 5 months ago. Molly deserves wider recognition
and I hope others check this recording.out and find as much enjoyment
within it as I have. As a long time Tull fan I particularly love the
wonderful flute playing contained within this CD. Steve's playing style
is great containing many rasping passages that old 'fluteyone' would
be proud of. Molly is no Tull rip off band though. They have created
their own style of inspired flute music. As such they can be mentioned
alongside other great bands featuring the flute such as Tull , Grovjobb
and Solaris
The
Molly Bloom CD is a great listening
experience.
I hope to catch the band at a gig some time. More
gigs please and thanks for the music.

a dark but wonderful atmosphere, Superb !
I saw on your website that you have an EP CD to be released soon. I
would definately like to buy this. I should be grateful if you can let
me know when it becomes available and how to get hold of it.
Thanks again for the hours of enjoyment your CD has given to me.

Hi
A good friend of mine commended your music and sent me a CDR with flutey
bits from several British bands. That's how I got aquanted with your music,
because one of the tracks was from Molly Bloom. I also listened to the
clips on your site and will of course order the CD soon too. I like your
fresh and original approach to music and am happy to see the flute playing
a role in it. This friend has been promoting your site and music in several
forums, thus evoking interest in Molly Bloom which is why several of my
mailing list members approached me and asked for granting you the web
site award. I decided to do so, but also because I think you guys could
use some extra exposure - musically speaking I mean ;-)
I hope to live to see the day that you guys will perform here in Holland.
Wishing you lots of success and inspiration.
Cordially,
Jan Voorbij |

I
saw you guys a couple of times playing at the Met Art's Center at Bury.
Once as a five piece and after as a four. Both times it was like a breath
of fresh air. What great stuff you all play, ( creepy and really theatrical
) and the choice of instuments are not the ones you usualy hear playing
such powerfull songs. I have your original album from that night , so
I will be buying your new stuff through this site! Hope to see you soon,
cheers
